Bethesda Game Studios confirmed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has reached 65 million units sold, pulling the 2011 fantasy epic into the conversation alongside CD Projekt's The Witcher 3 as one of gaming's best-selling titles ever.
Todd Howard, studio chief, announced the milestone during a company update that followed Xbox's recent layoffs. The figure represents a stunning feat for a game that launched over a decade and a half ago. Skyrim sold more than 3.5 million copies in its first 48 hours and has since been ported to virtually every platform capable of running it, from handheld devices to refrigerators.
Modding communities have played a crucial role in keeping the game alive. Players continue exploring the snowy lands of Skyrim, patching in everything from graphical overhauls to entirely new questlines, giving the base game an effectively infinite shelf life.
Bethesda's other major franchise performed strongly as well. Fallout 4 crossed 35 million units sold, placing it among gaming's top 25 best-sellers. Starfield, the studio's third major franchise, reached 17 million players, though Bethesda hasn't released traditional sales figures. Instead, Xbox boss Asha Sharma highlighted that Starfield was approaching 1 billion hours played, a metric that underscores the game's reach even if raw unit sales remain undisclosed.
But Bethesda's sights are firmly fixed on the future. The Elder Scrolls VI is now the studio's primary development focus, with the bulk of its workforce dedicated to the franchise's next chapter. Despite being officially announced in 2018, the game remains at least two years away from launch. Howard offered a reassuring update to fans worn down by the long wait, saying the team is satisfied with the game's direction and plays it daily.
Fallout 5 has entered pre-production, though no timeline was provided.
The sales race between Skyrim and The Witcher 3 adds an unexpected subplot to gaming's competitive landscape. CD Projekt announced The Witcher 3's 65 million mark in May. That game, released in 2015, continues its own momentum with a new expansion coming next year and work underway on The Witcher IV. Both franchises are now positioned for major sequels in the coming years, potentially setting up a blockbuster clash between two of gaming's most beloved RPG series.
For perspective, Minecraft dominates the all-time list with 400 million units sold, while GTA 6 sits in a distant second with 230 million. Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 has reached 85 million copies sold.
Author Emily Chen: "Skyrim's staying power at 65 million units is remarkable, but the real question is whether The Elder Scrolls VI can actually move the needle when it finally arrives in a market that's changed dramatically since 2011."
