Joseph Ziegler, the project lead behind Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon, is departing the studio after nearly four years. His last day was July 17, 2026.
Ziegler announced the move via X, a brief statement that offered thanks to the community but stopped short of explaining why he was leaving. He said he was heading "to something new, somewhere else" and promised to share details "soon."
Del Chafe III, the assistant game director, will take over Marathon's leadership alongside creative director Julia Nardin. In his farewell, Ziegler praised both as capable stewards of the project. "Both of them have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter," he wrote.
Ziegler joined Bungie in December 2022 as the game entered a critical phase of development. Marathon, a dark sci-fi survival game focused on team-based combat against hostile robots and other players, has been in live service since its launch earlier this year.
The departure comes as the game pushes toward Season 3, scheduled for September. The live service is currently running Season 2, so Chafe and Nardin will assume leadership during an active development cycle with new content on the horizon.
In his statement, Ziegler expressed genuine affection for the project and its community, describing the mission to build "a dark and terrifying space survival frontier" as a "windy" journey. He highlighted the creativity of players and the bonds formed at Bungie, closing with a note of optimism that the studio and community would "cross paths again."
Leadership transitions in live service games can create uncertainty around development timelines and creative direction. How smoothly Marathon continues under new management in the coming months will likely shape player confidence in the title's long-term vision.
Author Emily Chen: "Ziegler's exit without explanation is typical of the games industry's tight-lipped departures, but the promotion of two proven internal leaders at least signals continuity during a critical season for Marathon's player base."
