Trump pushes Graham's sister into South Carolina Senate race

President Trump threw his weight behind Darline Graham Nordone on Friday, urging the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham to run for his seat in a special Republican primary set for August 11, 2026.

Nordone has not announced her candidacy, but Trump's endorsement instantly transforms her standing in what is shaping up as a crowded GOP field. The winner of November's general election will hold the seat through January 2033.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump made his pitch directly and without hesitation. "I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate in the Special Republican Primary on Tuesday, August 11, 2026," he wrote. "I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey."

Trump went further, calling her "a WINNER all of her life" and pledging his "Complete and Total Endorsement" should she decide to enter the race. "SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN. RUN, DARLINE, RUN!" he concluded.

Nordone was sworn in earlier this week to fill her brother's seat for the remainder of the current term, which expires January 3, 2027. That move positioned her as an inside candidate with official standing, even as other Republicans begin lining up to contest the primary.

The timing of Trump's endorsement carries weight in South Carolina GOP politics. His backing has reshaped primary races across the country, and his explicit call for Nordone to run signals he intends to shape the contest for Graham's successor. Graham, who died late last year, was a longtime senator and foreign policy fixture in Washington, though his relationship with Trump had been contentious at points.

Whether Nordone accepts Trump's invitation remains unclear. No public statement from her has confirmed plans to seek the seat in her own right. But the former president's endorsement, issued before any formal announcement from the candidate herself, is a significant show of force in determining who will compete for the nomination.

The special primary election in August will determine the GOP nominee for the general election ballot in November, which will choose who fills the seat through the end of Graham's term and beyond.

Author James Rodriguez: "Trump's move to recruit Graham's sister before she's even publicly committed shows how much he values loyalty and family continuity in Republicans he backs."
