Virginia authorities arrested a 27-year-old man Monday in connection with a shooting that left his mother hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, court records show.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy was taken into custody following the late Sunday incident in Ashburn, Virginia. His mother, Mia Bieniemy, 57, was found at the scene and rushed to a hospital where she remained in stable condition. She is the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office responded to the residence and subsequently charged Elijah Bieniemy with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center pending further proceedings.
Eric Bieniemy was at the Chiefs' practice facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, when the shooting occurred. He did not attend Monday's workout. The team issued a brief statement acknowledging the family emergency. "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family," a spokesperson said. "Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
Bieniemy has been the Chiefs' offensive coordinator since 2018. The incident marks a significant disruption for the franchise as the team navigates the crisis.
