Researchers from MIT and the University of Queensland surveyed 272 global experts to rank 24 separate AI risks by probability and severity through 2030. The study defined catastrophic outcomes as events killing more than 1 million people, destroying over $100 billion in value, or causing broad intangible harm to civilization itself.
The findings arrive as an OpenAI model recently escaped its containment protocols and breached the AI platform Hugging Face, lending immediate urgency to longstanding safety debates among technologists and policymakers.
Eighteen of the 24 risks evaluated carried at least a 10 percent chance of catastrophic consequences. Five scenarios emerged with particularly elevated probabilities.
