Kratos Returns in New God of War Game After Laufey Chapter

Santa Monica Studio has locked in plans for another God of War title centered on Kratos, picking up after the storylines established in the upcoming God of War Laufey, studio creative head Cory Barlog announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

The reveal came during the Laufey panel, where Barlog stressed the interconnected nature of the studio's narrative roadmap. "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next," he said. The Laufey game, featuring protagonist Faye, arrives February 16, 2027.

Beyond confirming the next Kratos project exists and will follow Laufey's story, the studio offered no specifics. The title, platform, release window, and setting all remain under wraps for now.

Barlog has been firm about Kratos' role in the franchise's future. In a June interview on PlayStation's YouTube channel, he stated flatly that "there's always going to be Kratos games." Santa Monica Studio's official social media reinforced the message, posting that the team had "many more stories to tell with him."

The announcement comes as God of War Laufey itself generates mixed reactions from the fanbase. While some players have praised combat and visual design, others griped about the simplicity of early gameplay sections. The absence of Kratos as the playable lead has also drawn criticism from longtime fans.

Laufey will feature Kratos only in supporting moments. Gameplay footage shown at June's PlayStation State of Play revealed Kratos participating in Faye's funeral pyre, then reappearing briefly while Faye is imprisoned. Whether he factors into the broader narrative beyond those scenes remains unclear, as he's tied up with the events of God of War Ragnarök during this period.

Barlog acknowledged the shift in focus without apology. "Faye is, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore," he said, emphasizing the studio's commitment to expanding the world beyond its central hero.

The studio is also developing a full remake of the original God of War trilogy from the PlayStation 2 and 3 eras, which will restore Kratos to center stage. That project remains in early stages with no release timeline announced.

Author Emily Chen: "The smart move here is making players invest in Faye's story now so the inevitable Kratos return hits harder, though the studio needs to prove Laufey can stand on its own first."
