God of War Laufey Locked for February 2027 Release

Sony Santa Monica Studio confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that God of War Laufey will launch on February 16, 2027. The announcement came during the game's panel at the convention and settles what many expected after the publisher revealed the title would arrive on physical disc before PlayStation stops manufacturing physical media in 2028.

The game centers on Faye, the character who dies in the opening moments of 2018's God of War. A 20-minute gameplay segment showcased at June's PlayStation State of Play revealed how players will experience her story, beginning with Kratos and Atreus cremating her body before shifting perspective to follow Faye herself. Kratos appears briefly to help Faye during a prison sequence, though his exact role throughout the full campaign remains unclear.

Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio's head of creative, also revealed plans for the franchise beyond Laufey. A new Kratos-centered God of War game is already in development and will directly follow Faye's story, creating a narrative bridge between the two titles.

The spin-off has drawn mixed reactions from the community. Combat mechanics and visual presentation have earned praise from some players, while others found the early gameplay sections overly simplified. The shift away from Kratos as the primary protagonist has also sparked criticism among longtime fans who prefer the gruff god at the center of the action.

The February release date gives the studio roughly nine months to complete final development. With the series' established pattern of major releases and the announcement of another Kratos game in the pipeline, Santa Monica appears committed to sustaining momentum in the God of War universe through at least 2028.

Author Emily Chen: "Pushing a Faye-focused God of War to 2027 is a bold creative gamble, and the mixed reactions show players aren't entirely sold on leaving Kratos on the sidelines."
