Creative Assembly has pulled back the curtain on Total War: Warhammer 40,000's scale ambitions, revealing what the studio describes as the largest unit ever to appear in a Total War game. The culprit is the Orks' Stompa, a towering mechanical monstrosity that functions as a mobile fortress capable of decimating anything on the battlefield.
During a livestream battle showcase, David Petry, the game's battle product owner, confirmed the developers deliberately engineered the Stompa as a size ceiling for the franchise. "We really wanted to put the biggest thing that we could get away with in a Total War game," Petry said as the hulking unit lumbered across the screen.
The Stompa itself is pure Ork engineering: a crude amalgamation of salvaged parts welded into a walking war machine. The unit houses a full crew of Ork pilots alongside dozens of Grot assistants and riggers, and bristles with heavy firepower. Two or three enormous cannons and a devastating melee claw give it the capacity to shred infantry formations and pulverize armored vehicles. Enemy tanks should rightfully fear any Stompa that rolls their direction.
During the streamed battle, the opposing Astra Militarum faction attempted to eliminate the Stompa using an orbital strike, one of the game's most devastating but rare abilities. The unit absorbed the impact in a moment that visibly shocked the developers, though the Stompa ultimately succumbed to the damage moments later in a catastrophic explosion.
Creative Assembly has already signaled that bigger units could arrive in future updates. When asked about expansion possibilities, Petry noted the studio is actively exploring ways to push the scale even further. The prospect raises obvious questions: could Titans join the roster eventually? Tyranid Bio Titans? The studio hasn't committed to specifics, but the door is clearly open.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 remains without an announced release date, though Creative Assembly has maintained a steady cadence of reveals and gameplay footage in recent weeks. The studio previously confirmed that Ork Warboss Nazdreg Ug Urdgrub would appear as a named character, though how such legendary figures integrate into campaign mechanics remains undisclosed.
Author Emily Chen: "The Stompa is exactly the kind of spectacle showcase that sells strategy games now, but let's see if it's actually fun to use in real matches or just a one-off wow moment."
