Amazon Games has officially delayed Tomb Raider: Catalyst to 2028, ending months of speculation about the next-generation franchise entry. Jeffrey Gattis, head of Amazon's gaming division, revealed the timeline in a statement to The Game Business, also confirming that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will arrive February 12, 2027.
"Atlantis comes February 12 of next year, and then we'll follow on in 2028 with the next one," Gattis said, without providing a more specific launch window for Catalyst.
The two titles were announced simultaneously in December. Catalyst, built on Unreal Engine 5 and developed by Crystal Dynamics, had originally been scheduled for a 2027 release across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The game follows Lara Croft into Northern India, where she confronts ancient forces awakened by a mythical cataclysm and competes against rival treasure hunters to uncover buried secrets and prevent catastrophic misuse of newly discovered power.
Legacy of Atlantis itself experienced delays earlier in the year, having been pushed from a 2024 release to early 2027. Both games star Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft, marking a shift from Camilla Luddington, who voiced the character across the Survivor Trilogy.
The delay comes as Crystal Dynamics continues navigating turbulent waters. The developer has undergone four rounds of staff reductions in just 12 months, with March's layoffs hitting the studio hard. Despite the cuts, Crystal Dynamics stated it remained "fully committed to the future development" of the Tomb Raider franchise.
Amazon's gaming ambitions extend beyond the interactive titles. The company is also developing a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, casting Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner in the lead role.
Author Emily Chen: "Pushing Catalyst to 2028 makes sense given Crystal Dynamics' staffing challenges, but Amazon's dual investment in games and prestige TV suggests they're betting big on the franchise's broader revival."
