Creative Assembly's Total War: Warhammer 40,000 has added another heavyweight to its roster. Ork Warboss Nazdreg Ug Urdgrub, leader of the Bad Moon clan, will appear in the strategy game alongside a newly sculpted tabletop miniature from Games Workshop.
The announcement marks a significant moment for the character. Nazdreg, second only to the legendary Ghazghkull Thraka in Ork hierarchy, hasn't received a fresh model since the turn of the millennium despite his prominence in Warhammer 40K lore. His new miniature includes his signature Kustom Blasta X and Bad Moon banner.
According to Games Workshop, Nazdreg will be positioned as a "key character" in Total War's early campaign narrative, playing a central role in the ongoing battles around Armageddon. The war-torn planet forms the foundation of 40K's current 11th edition storyline and will feature heavily in the strategy game itself.
Nazdreg joins a growing list of confirmed named characters. Space Marine commander Marneus Calgar, Astra Militarum Commissar Sebastian Yarrick, and Ork prophet Ghazghkull Thraka have all been announced. The pairing of Yarrick and Ghazghkull carries particular weight, given their legendary rivalry spanning decades of lore.
The exact mechanics governing how these characters function in gameplay remain unclear. Creative Assembly's existing Total War: Warhammer titles feature Legendary Lords that players can command in campaign, multiplayer, and custom battles. Whether the 40K characters will follow a similar framework is still unknown.
Industry observers expect more announcements in coming months. Space Marines and Astra Militarum have only one confirmed character each, suggesting further additions from both factions. The Aeldari, confirmed as a launch faction, likely have their own named leaders waiting in the wings. Possible candidates could include psyker Eldrad Ulthran or Phoenix Lord Asurmen, though Warhammer 40K's sprawling lore offers countless possibilities.
The question of primarch inclusion remains unanswered. While the power disparity could feel unbalanced, rival game Dawn of War 4 demonstrates the concept is viable, featuring Dark Angels primarch Lion El'Jonson in limited, campaign-specific scenarios. Ultramarines leader Roboute Guilliman could theoretically appear in similar fashion.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is in development for PC and console, with no release window announced.
Author Emily Chen: "Nazdreg's inclusion signals Creative Assembly is pulling deep from 40K lore rather than playing it safe with obvious picks, which bodes well for the character roster."
