Ubisoft's remake of Assassin's Creed Black Flag has cleared 3 million copies sold, pushing the publisher to commit to a New Game Plus mode for the pirate adventure. The milestone marks explosive growth for the July launch, adding 1 million sales in just one week after the game crossed 2 million copies in its first 24 hours.
The sales surge is noteworthy partly because Ubisoft rarely publicizes specific copy counts for new Assassin's Creed releases, typically keeping player metrics private. The willingness to trumpet these numbers suggests confidence in Black Flag Resynced's commercial performance, even as the company faced industry scrutiny over layoffs announced days after the game shipped to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Game director Richard Knight confirmed the New Game Plus feature is actively in development during a recent conversation with content creator JorRaptor. While he avoided pinpointing a release date, Knight explained that Ubisoft is treating the mode as a priority item partly because the newer Assassin's Creed Shadows already built its own version, lowering technical risk.
"It's just such a natural thing," Knight said of the feature, though he cautioned the team couldn't yet promise specifics on timing or exactly how the mode would function. He positioned New Game Plus near the top of the post-launch support roadmap alongside quality-of-life updates and bug fixes.
The remake has maintained strong critical standing, earning a "Very Positive" rating on Steam and drawing a 9/10 from major outlets. Ubisoft's support efforts appear to be paying dividends, though the game has drawn some criticism over its microtransaction implementation, which reportedly generated $1 million in revenue on Steam within days of launch.
