Nick Apostolides, the actor behind Leon S. Kennedy's iconic growl in the Resident Evil franchise, recently divulged a joke that never made it past Capcom's editing room. During a podcast appearance with fellow voice performers Ben Starr and Alanah Pearce, Apostolides shared the punchline he'd pitched for Leon's showdown with the Titan Spinner boss in Resident Evil Requiem.
The line was vintage Leon: "You know, you've been a real itsy-bitsy pain in my ass." Apostolides even recorded it in his signature gruff delivery, fully expecting the wisecrack to land alongside the character's other corny, action-movie one-liners that define his personality throughout the game.
"It would have been a banger," Apostolides said on the podcast, calling it his "favorite" line the team had cut. Both Starr and Pearce immediately agreed it would have been perfect, and the reaction rippled across social media, with fans on X lamenting the loss of what would have been an unforgettable quip.
Instead, Capcom opted for safer dialogue. Leon now delivers milder critiques during the spider encounter: "You are a real pest, you know that?" and "I don't have time for pest control." Competent lines, certainly, but they lack the comedic edge Apostolides was reaching for.
The revelation underscores how much of Leon's appeal hinges on his willingness to crack jokes in the face of bioweapon nightmares. That tone crystallized in Resident Evil 4 and has become central to his character ever since. Apostolides' portrayal in Requiem doubled down on that '80s action hero energy, making moments like this cut line feel like a missed opportunity to deepen what fans love about the character.
Looking ahead, the franchise has plenty on its plate. Capcom is developing a Code Veronica remake targeted for 2027, while a film adaptation by director Zach Cregger is arriving in theaters this October. The movie has already stirred cautious optimism among longtime series devotees, though whether it will capture the same charm as Leon's one-liners remains to be seen.
Author Emily Chen: "Sometimes the best jokes are the ones that don't make the final cut, and this one absolutely should have."
