Federal Marshal Killed During Arrest Operation in Louisiana

A deputy US marshal was shot and killed Monday while federal agents and local law enforcement worked to apprehend a man who had skipped his sexual battery trial in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Drew Hanson died after being struck by gunfire during the operation. His alleged killer, Clarence Frazier Jr., 48, now faces murder charges that could result in life imprisonment or capital punishment if he is convicted.

The joint task force obtained a search warrant for Frazier's residence and announced their presence upon arrival. When officers forced entry, they discovered Frazier barricaded in a bedroom. He opened fire on the agents, fatally wounding Hanson before a standoff ensued.

Frazier sustained injuries during the confrontation and was taken into custody and transported to a hospital. He was charged following his arrest.

Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a statement honoring Hanson's service. "His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his service will forever stand as an inspiration to all who wear the badge," Blanche said.

The killing marks another loss for the US Marshals Service, which has lost more than 200 deputy marshals, special deputy marshals, and marshal guards to line-of-duty deaths since the agency's founding in 1794.

Author James Rodriguez: "Another reminder that serving an arrest warrant, even routine cases, carries real danger that marshals and their families understand too well."
