Magic adds Star Trek to its card arsenal as preorders open

Magic: The Gathering is boldly going where no trading card game has gone before. Starting November 13, players can dive into a new crossover set celebrating 60 years of Star Trek, the final major expansion Wizards of the Coast is releasing in 2026.

Preorders launched on Amazon with the full range of sealed products fans have come to expect. Booster boxes, Commander decks, bundles, and specialty boxes are all available, giving collectors and competitive players multiple entry points into the sci-fi themed release.

The set introduces several mechanics to the game while reviving others from Magic's deep history. The Spacecraft artifact subtype makes a return, appearing on cards like U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class. But the real draw for serious collectors is something altogether different: Autograph cards.

These ultra-rare alternate art creature cards feature actual handwritten signatures from the actors who portrayed characters like Captain Kirk and Captain Janeway. Fewer than 200 of these cards exist worldwide, and they only appear in Collector booster packs. Finding one will require serious luck on the pack-ripping hunt.

Wizards of the Coast is offering multiple ways to engage with the set depending on budget and interest level. Play boosters contain 15 cards from the full set and serve as the primary way to build decks. Collector boosters focus on rare alternate art versions, foils, and those coveted Autograph cards.

Four preconstructed Commander decks ship with the set, each featuring a different Star Trek character as the central commander: Captain Picard, Spock, a Klingon, and the Borg. Each uses a three-color combination, and Collector's Editions of each deck come entirely in Surge foil.

Bundle options include the standard nine Play boosters and foil cards, plus a new "Beam Me Up Bundle" that adds a Collector booster and two special foil promo cards to the package.

Scene Boxes highlight two key moments from the franchise. The Enterprise-Q box draws from a classic episode, while the Divergent Timeline box depicts the crew as reimagined in J.J. Abrams' modern reboot films.

Newcomers to Magic have a dedicated entry point as well. The Beginner Box teaches the basics while building a starter collection, making it ideal for Trekkies curious about the game. For experienced drafters wanting a faster format, Draft Night uses a 4-player Pick Two structure and comes with 12 Play boosters, one Collector booster, and 90 basic lands.

Author Emily Chen: "Autograph cards are a bold gamble that will either feel exclusive and thrilling or frustrating depending on who you ask, but there's no denying Wizards knows how to make a set feel special."
