Halo Studios has cancelled a new multiplayer project codenamed Ekur that was in development at Certain Affinity, the studio responsible for support work on multiple entries in the franchise. The cancellation was first reported by YouTuber Rebs Gaming and confirmed by Windows Central's Jez Corden.
Ekur evolved from an earlier battle royale concept called Tatanka. The new direction shifted toward what developers described as a "super big team battle idea," inspired by Halo 5's large-scale Warzone mode and experimentation with extraction gameplay mechanics. The multiplayer experience would have leveraged existing map assets built during the Tatanka phase and used Unreal Engine, the same technology powering the upcoming Halo: Combat Evolved remake.
The project's cancellation traces back to resource constraints. Development challenges on Campaign Evolved, the single-player entry in the franchise's remake initiative, pulled staff away from the multiplayer effort. It remains unclear whether Ekur was intended as a free-to-play title designed to broaden appeal after Halo Infinite's audience decline, or as a premium paid experience.
Halo Infinite's servers remain operational, though player engagement has weakened considerably. The multiplayer void comes at a precarious moment for the franchise, with a new Xbox console approaching and Microsoft actively working to revitalize its flagship gaming properties. Sources suggest the cancellation was not connected to Microsoft's recent internal reorganization, leaving open the possibility of revival.
For now, competitive players seeking a new Halo multiplayer experience have no timeline. Campaign Evolved will deliver single-player and cooperative play when it arrives, but the competitive void extends further into the future than Microsoft may prefer, particularly as competitors continue pushing their own multiplayer ecosystems.
Author Emily Chen: "Microsoft's multiplayer drought on Halo is becoming untenable, and pulling developers away from a big-team concept to chase a singleplayer remake feels strategically backwards for a franchise built on multiplayer dominance."
