Hundreds of masked white supremacists march through DC on July 4th with Confederate flags

Hundreds of members of Patriot Front, a white supremacist organization, paraded through Washington DC on the Fourth of July carrying Confederate flags and other banners, marching toward Capitol Hill while chanting nationalist slogans.

The group, led by founder Thomas Rousseau, assembled at Union Station on Saturday wearing white masks. Members chanted "Life, liberty, victory!" and "Reclaim America!" during the demonstration, which occurred on the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Video footage showed Patriot Front members riding the DC Metro as other passengers watched with visible discomfort. The march drew counter-protesters, with one activist using a bullhorn to confront the group.

DC's Metropolitan Police Department said it was monitoring "first amendment activities that occurred this morning in the Eastern Market neighborhood" and noted the department "recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views" while remaining committed to public safety.

Patriot Front emerged in 2017 following the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The group has become increasingly visible over recent years, drawing attention for its organizational sophistication and reach. A 2022 assessment by Morgan Moon, an investigative researcher with the ADL Center on Extremism, highlighted Patriot Front's exceptional capabilities compared to other white supremacist organizations operating in the United States.

"No other white supremacist group operating in the US today is able to match Patriot Front's ability to produce media, ability to mobilize across the country and ability to finance," Moon stated at the time. "That's what makes them a particular concern."

The group was spotted marching again during Memorial Day weekend at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. In another recent development, Patriot Front's leader claimed involvement in relief efforts following deadly flooding in central Texas.

The march took place as former President Trump delivered a speech condemning what he called a "communist menace" in America during July Fourth celebrations. The White House did not respond to requests for comment on the Patriot Front demonstration.

Author James Rodriguez: "A white supremacist group openly marching under a Confederate flag in the nation's capital on Independence Day is a stark reminder that extremist movements are operating with brazen visibility in this country."
