Three children drown as sudden storm sinks boat on Wisconsin lake

A recreational motorboat carrying ten people capsized Friday afternoon on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, killing three children and prompting a desperate rescue operation that pulled seven others from the water as a sudden storm swept across the region.

The boat attempted to reach safety as weather deteriorated rapidly, according to the Lake Geneva police department. First responders rescued one child and six adults from the water, but three children went missing. All were later recovered, and life-saving measures were administered, though all three were pronounced dead.

All four children aboard the boat were wearing lifejackets at the time of the capsizing. Police withheld the victims' identities pending completion of their investigation into the incident.

The storm's fury extended far beyond the lake. Powerful winds knocked down trees and power lines across the Lake Geneva area, damaging buildings and leaving residents struggling to cope with widespread destruction. Undersheriff Tom Hausner reported that emergency dispatchers fielded numerous 911 calls reporting damage, downed trees, and people trapped inside buildings.

"Power lines are all over the place," Hausner said at a news conference. "We are urging people to stay away." The debris from fallen power lines slowed emergency response times to some calls, he added.

At least one person suffered minor injuries from a toppled tree. Lake Geneva officials declared a state of emergency as the storm tore through the popular summer destination.

Police issued a warning to boaters about the unpredictable nature of severe weather on area waterways. "We strongly urge all boaters to closely monitor weather forecasts, remain vigilant of changing atmospheric conditions and seek safe harbor immediately when threatening weather approaches," the department said in a statement.

The Friday tragedy unfolded as much of the country braced for dangerous heat heading into the Independence Day weekend. An estimated 250 million Americans faced warnings of extreme temperatures as the nation observed the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Author James Rodriguez: "This is a stark reminder that recreational waterways can turn lethal in minutes, and the contrast between a family outing and a tragedy happened in the span of one sudden storm."
