Arc System Works is dusting off BlazBlue: Central Fiction with a surprise announcement: a new playable character is coming to the 2015 fighting game, more than ten years after its original arcade debut.
The publisher revealed the news through a teaser trailer during its 2026 showcase event, though details remain sparse. The full character reveal is set for Evo 2026 this weekend.
Producer Riku Ozawa credited the game's enduring fan community for making the unexpected DLC possible. "It's been many years since this game was released," Ozawa said during the showcase. "We were able to make this new development happen thanks to the continued support of fans around the world who have kept the game alive."
The decision to announce the character before showing gameplay footage was deliberate. Ozawa acknowledged that the team normally waits until in-game footage is ready before going public. "Development for this DLC character was only settled very recently," he explained. "This time, however, I wanted to share with everyone that we are working on this as soon as I could, so we've made this announcement without gameplay footage."
One detail Ozawa did confirm: the new fighter is a returning character from the broader BlazBlue franchise. "A certain someone who has appeared in the main BlazBlue games" will join the roster, though he stopped short of naming the specific character.
BlazBlue: Central Fiction launched in arcades in late 2015 and came to PlayStation 3 and 4 in late 2016. Arc System Works, known for its 2D fighting game expertise, later ported the title to PC and Nintendo Switch, helping it reach a wider audience over the years.
Author Emily Chen: "A decade-old fighting game getting new content is increasingly rare, and it speaks volumes about BlazBlue's loyal community that Arc System Works is returning to it now."
