Bungie's communications manager has pushed back against fans who fear they didn't do enough to save Destiny 2, insisting the community bears no responsibility for the studio's decision to end support for the decade-old shooter.
The announcement that Bungie would halt new content for Destiny 2 landed like a gut punch roughly a month ago. While the game remains playable, players understand the end is coming. Some in the community began second-guessing themselves, wondering if greater engagement might have changed the outcome.
Dylan Gafner, Bungie's communications manager, shut that down directly. In a message to the community, he stressed that nothing more could have been done and thanked fans for their nearly ten years of loyalty.
"You all have done more for this game and our studio than could ever be imagined, and no words can accurately depict how lucky we are to have shared these worlds with you," Gafner wrote. "Don't blame yourselves or think you could have / should have done more. This is just the way it goes sometimes. No matter the future, we will always have these memories."
The reassurance comes against a backdrop of troubling developments at the studio. Destiny 3 is not in active development, and sources say Bungie is preparing for significant layoffs. Some former staff have openly discussed abandoned projects, including a Destiny-themed dating simulator that never materialized.
Bungie is now betting its future on Marathon, a free-to-play extraction shooter that has underperformed commercially since launch. The broader games industry continues to grapple with economic pressures, making it increasingly risky for studios to greenlight expensive, ambitious titles.
The path forward for Bungie remains uncertain. Any major new project would likely take years to develop, if one gets the green light at all.
