Capcom is pushing back on complaints that the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo lacks teeth, revealing that the studio deliberately softened the challenge to let players experience more of protagonist Musashi's moveset early on.
Producer Akihito Kadowaki addressed the feedback in a video posted to the franchise's official channels, acknowledging that some players found the demo too forgiving. The explanation, however, points to design choices rather than oversight.
The demo only covers the opening portion of the story, Kadowaki noted. More importantly, Capcom intentionally equipped Musashi with late-game abilities from the start, a decision meant to showcase the variety of combat options available to players without locking them behind hours of progression. That hand-holding in the demo doesn't reflect how the full game will play.
"In the final game, the bosses and the regular Genma will put up a tougher fight," Kadowaki said, urging players to wait for the complete experience before rendering judgment on difficulty.
The demo has already reached one million downloads across PC and console platforms, suggesting Capcom's decision to release it has paid off in terms of generating interest. The full game launches September 25, 2026, marking the return of Onimusha as a proper sequel for the first time since the PlayStation 2 era. Nintendo Switch 2 owners will also have access at launch, following a confirmation during the latest Nintendo Direct.
The release date puts Onimusha in a crowded stretch of fall 2026, squeezed between Silent Hill: Townfall and Ace Combat 8, among other major releases. Publishers are making a final push before the inevitable gravity well of Grand Theft Auto 6 dominates the remainder of the year.
Author Emily Chen: "Capcom's preemptive strike on the difficulty complaints shows they're listening, but the real test comes when the full game hits and players realize whether that promise holds up."
