Magic: The Gathering is bringing five new Marvel Super Heroes cards into the game, with designers Mark Rosewater and Jesse Falcon showing them off at IGN Live today. The set launches June 26.
White introduces Hyperion, Supreme, the Squadron Supreme's leader and a deep cut for Marvel fans. Blue features Immortus, Master of Eternity, one of Kang's most formidable variants. Black gets two Doctor Doom cards, including Doctor Doom, Unrivaled as a Mythic. Rosewater explained the reasoning for the duplicate: "There is a Doctor Doom in the main set, but you can't have just one Doctor Doom! You need another because he's one of the best villains in Marvel."
Red's entry pairs two icons together on a single card: The Vision and Scarlet Witch. While individual versions exist in the main set, Rosewater wanted them united. "Obviously they are a very famous pair, so we wanted to see them on a card together."
Green rounds out the reveal with Sauron, Dino Devotee, a Mythic that nods to one of Marvel's most enduring memes from the comics. The card references a particularly absurd moment involving either curing cancer or turning people into dinosaurs. Falcon acknowledged the comic moment directly: "It's one of my favorite Marvel memes! If we're not having fun, what are we doing?"
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes arrives worldwide at the end of the month, marking another collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Marvel that blends superhero lore with TCG mechanics.
Author Emily Chen: "Rosewater's willingness to lean into Marvel's weirdness and fan moments shows they get what makes these crossovers actually work."
