Magic: The Gathering is crossing over with Marvel in a fresh Jumpstart format that lets players mash together themed packs into instant 40-card decks. The Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart set launches with 51 different theme options and a massive influx of new and reprinted cards designed to make the format feel as expansive as the Marvel universe itself.
The appeal of Jumpstart has always been its simplicity. You grab two theme packs at random, shuffle them together, and you're ready to play. The Marvel edition ramps up the variety significantly. You might end up pairing the Fantastic Four against Dr. Doom, or matching the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Young Avengers. Each matchup plays differently depending on which themes emerged from the booster.
Over 180 brand new cards have been created specifically for this set, with most themes containing between three and seven exclusive cards. These new cards carry the MSC set code, which bars them from Standard play but opens them up for Commander and other eternal formats. For players who stick exclusively to Jumpstart, the format restriction barely matters.
Alongside the fresh designs sits a collection of 62 reprints pulled from Magic's back catalog. Some get new art treatment, like Lightning Bolt reimagined with Thor channeling the power, while others return with their original artwork from previous sets including last year's Spider-Man release. The reprints include some powerful older cards, notably Doomsday, a notorious combo piece that pairs with new threats like Doctor Doom, Unrivaled from the DOOM theme pack.
Rarity distribution varies across the 51 themes. The Fantastic Four pack sits at Mythic rarity, making it among the hardest to pull, while Young Avengers lands at Common. Each theme maintains a fixed card list with no variability, meaning if you get the same theme twice, you're getting identical packs. But finding specific themes becomes part of the hunt.
Every pack includes reprints from the main Marvel Super Heroes set, cards from the separate Beginner Box, and cards from Welcome Decks. Lands round out each theme so players actually have mana to cast spells. Some cards appear across multiple themes, adding layers of complexity for collectors tracking the full set.
Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart arrives in stages. Tabletop prerelease events kick off on June 19, followed by an MTG Arena digital release on June 23. The full paper release hits stores on June 26. The set rounds out Marvel's Magic offerings alongside four new Commander decks launching simultaneously.
Author Emily Chen: "Jumpstart has always been Magic's gateway drug, and loading it with Marvel flavor and nearly 200 new cards makes it impossible to ignore."
