ArenaNet pulled back the curtain on Guild Wars 3 during Summer Game Fest, confirming the studio's next major MMORPG entry more than a decade after Guild Wars 2 launched. The reveal marked a significant milestone for the franchise, which is expanding to consoles for the first time.
The showcase trailer introduced the Vaelwarden, the player character, riding a wolf-like mount and scaling cliff faces across the Tyrian region of Orr. The setting unfolds a thousand years before the original Guild Wars, placing players in the middle of guild conflicts while tasked with protecting nature and its spirits. New magical systems center on Vael spirits and an entity called the Seeker, which anchors players to the land itself.
ArenaNet is betting on action-oriented combat that relies on momentum and traversal. The team designed the game specifically for keyboard-mouse and gamepad controls, with branching skill trees offering deep customization. Players will team up in groups of four to explore the world together.
Studio head Colin Johanson framed the project as a push forward for the genre. "Our approach with Guild Wars 3 is to push MMORPGs forward, to create an online game world that feels believable, rewarding, responsive, and innovative while at the same time respecting players' time and providing a positive, supportive space to build community and enjoy new stories in our universe," he said.
True to series tradition, Guild Wars 3 will launch without a subscription requirement, a rarity among modern MMORPGs. The game is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, marking the franchise's console debut. Players can wishlist the title now and sign up for updates at GuildWars3.com. ArenaNet plans to run a closed beta test beginning in Fall 2027.
Guild Wars 2 remains active 14 years after its release, supported by regular updates and expansions like Visions of Eternity from 2025. The new entry suggests ArenaNet is prepared to invest in long-term development and community engagement for the next generation of its universe.
Author Emily Chen: "A subscription-free MMORPG on consoles with momentum-based combat is bold, but ArenaNet's track record with community support gives the pitch real weight."
