Activision and Infinity Ward are banking on player feedback to make their second attempt at an extraction shooter stick. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch with a rebuilt DMZ mode designed as a full release rather than another experimental side project, the studio announced today.
The original DMZ arrived as a beta in Modern Warfare 2 back in 2022, drawing inspiration from games like Escape from Tarkov. The reception was mixed, and while some elements carried over to Modern Warfare 3's MWZ mode, the developers say they are approaching this iteration fundamentally differently. The extraction genre has matured significantly since then, and Modern Warfare 4's DMZ reflects lessons learned from both that initial launch and years of community input.
The new DMZ takes place in Hajin, a sprawling exclusion zone spanning a tri-point border region between Russia and the Korean peninsula. The setting connects directly to Modern Warfare 4's campaign narrative, with players deployed as shadow CIA operatives tasked with recovering abandoned military technology and weapons before hostile forces can claim them. The mode weaves story into gameplay through narrative-driven missions and multi-step objectives called Dynamic Operations, though players who prefer pure exploration can freely roam and engage AI enemies and other operators without following structured goals.
Environmental variables like rain and fog reshape the zone dynamically, and Infinity Ward describes Hajin as one of the largest and most ambitious environments the franchise has ever constructed. At the center sits a Forward Operating Base that serves as both a player hub and social space. The base can be upgraded with various services, including a 3D printer for crafting, inventory storage, a firing range, and a leaderboard tracking player notoriety.
The competitive angle comes through in the Bounty Leaderboard system. Players who rack up kills against rival operators build notoriety and climb rankings, which places bounties on their heads. Eliminating high-notoriety targets and collecting their dog tags offers hefty payouts for successful extraction, incentivizing PvP encounters and creating natural tension between cooperation and conflict.
DMZ progression operates independently from the main multiplayer. All experience earned in the mode ranks up a dedicated DMZ rank, unlocking unique operator traits and enabling players to create multiple loadout variations. Infinity Ward emphasized that the mode launches with this dedicated progression system built in from day one.
The mode launches October 23, 2026, alongside Modern Warfare 4 for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S. Additional details are expected at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 event.
Author Emily Chen: "If Infinity Ward actually listened to what sank DMZ the first time around, this version could finally prove the extraction format works in Call of Duty's universe."
