Mafia: The Old Country's Surprise DLC Brings Back the Crime Boss Origins

Hangar 13 is keeping players invested in Mafia: The Old Country with a story expansion arriving next month. The studio announced Man of Honor, a DLC chapter that digs into the past of Don Salieri, the ruthless antagonist from the original Mafia game, before his rise to power transformed him into the kingpin players remember.

The expansion launches August 14th for $10 and adds two new story chapters that unfold during winter 1905, positioned in the middle of the main campaign's timeline. Players will control Enzo as he assists Ennio Salieri following the latter's release from prison. The DLC also bundles in new Free Ride content, along with additional weapons, vehicles, and environments to explore.

Associate design director Josh Zammit explained the creative motivation behind revisiting Salieri during his formative years. "We dive into some of the stories about what he was doing beforehand, stuff that players of the previous games won't know," Zammit told Polygon. "Ultimately, his goal to get to America is his driving factor at this point. And maybe that plays into the later story, right? Plants a little bit of a seed in Enzo's head about what he might want to do with his future."

The DLC announcement carries particular weight given Mafia: The Old Country's origins. The title shipped last year as a $50 game built on a smaller, leaner scale, eschewing the sprawling open-world design typical of modern AAA entries. Instead, it returned to the linear, story-focused blueprint that defined the original Mafia and its sequel. That focused approach resonated, turning the game into a commercial success strong enough to justify ongoing development and support.

The expansion marks an interesting direction for a game that wasn't positioned as a long-term live-service project. Rather than chase seasonal content or cosmetic monetization, Hangar 13 is doubling down on narrative depth, using the DLC to flesh out character backstories and explore thematic threads woven through the franchise's history.

Author Emily Chen: "A $10 story DLC with real meat on it beats the usual live-service treadmill every time."
