Horizon Steel Frontiers MMORPG Arriving Next Year, NCSoft Confirms

PlayStation's expanding Horizon universe is about to welcome an unconventional new entry. NCSoft has revealed that Horizon Steel Frontiers, a mobile-first massively multiplayer online game set in the franchise, will launch during the first half of 2027, according to the publisher's latest investor presentation.

The announcement marks a significant acceleration for Sony's gaming roadmap. If the timeline holds, the franchise will see a new release within roughly a year, continuing its rapid expansion across multiple platforms and genres.

Horizon Steel Frontiers takes the series in a fresh direction by prioritizing multiplayer gameplay over narrative focus. Rather than following Aloy's story, the game casts players as machine hunters operating in the Deadlands, where they'll compete and cooperate with other players in Monster Hunter-style combat. The title was officially revealed in November 2025 but had lacked a concrete release window until now.

While the game is being developed with mobile devices as the primary target, NCSoft plans to bring it to PC through its Purple platform, ensuring console players won't miss out on the experience.

The MMORPG launch comes as PlayStation juggles multiple Horizon spinoffs simultaneously. Horizon Hunters Gathering, a tactical co-op title being developed with Guerrilla Games for PlayStation 5 and PC, still lacks a confirmed release date. That leaves Horizon Steel Frontiers as the franchise's next confirmed entry.

Sony has aggressively diversified the Horizon IP over the past two years. After launching Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and Lego Horizon Adventures in 2024, the company now oversees projects spanning VR, mobile, and traditional console gaming. The original Horizon Zero Dawn debuted on PS4 in 2017, followed by Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 and Horizon: Call of the Mountain for PlayStation VR in 2023.
