Sixteen years after AION: The Tower of Eternity captivated millions with its emphasis on aerial combat and magical landscapes, the long-awaited sequel finally has a release window. NC has confirmed that AION 2 will arrive globally in September as a free-to-play title, built entirely in Unreal Engine 5 rather than the modified CryEngine that powered the original.
The visual overhaul marks a significant departure from its predecessor. By abandoning the aging CryEngine architecture, the development team gained the flexibility to expand the game world dramatically. The new landmass stretches 36 times larger than the first game's environments, with fully open regions designed for vertical exploration and unrestricted flight. Each zone connects seamlessly into a single cohesive world that encourages players to discover its secrets rather than follow rigid quest corridors.
The story picks up two centuries after the original game's conclusion. Familiar locations from AION return, though time has ravaged them in recognizable and unrecognizable ways alike. Aether, the essence that transforms humans into powerful Daevas, has become increasingly scarce, forcing the player character to navigate a world that feels simultaneously nostalgic and treacherous.
Combat and Character Development
The combat system moves away from passive gameplay entirely. There's no auto-attack option, meaning players must actively target and strike enemies in real-time. Eight classes launch with the game, each filling distinct roles. Gladiators blend tanking and damage, Templars anchor the frontline, Assassins and Rangers deliver rapid strikes, Sorcerers specialize in explosive burst damage, and Spiritmasters command summons to dominate encounters. Clerics and Chanters round out the roster as hybrid support units that blend healing and utility with their own offensive capabilities.
Class synergy takes precedence in group content. Four-player and eight-player dungeons demand that teams coordinate their character selections to maximize effectiveness. The game features nearly 200 dungeons at launch, each introducing unique mechanics that force adaptation. Large-scale field events provide PvE variety beyond instanced content, while solo players can tackle most dungeons alone if preferred.
PvP encompasses multiple modes targeting different playstyles. Arena battles pit players in 1v1 duels or 4v4 team skirmishes. Larger battlefields support 8v8 clashes, and cross-server realm-versus-realm combat accommodates dozens of players in simultaneous conflict. The Abyss, a faction-controlled territory from the original AION, returns as a contested aerial warzone where flight dominates strategy.
Beyond combat, AION 2 invests heavily in character expression and collection. More than 200 customization options allow players to craft unique appearances. A Style Shop lets players share their favorite looks through the official website, enabling others to download and replicate complete cosmetic combinations. A pet system operates on collection mechanics, with players hunting monsters to capture their souls as unlockable companions that also function as personal mounts.
AION 2 launches on PC only, accessible through either Steam or PURPLE. The September release marks the culmination of a project first announced in 2018, delivering on NC's promise to modernize and expand a franchise that defined an era of MMORPG design.
Author Emily Chen: "A 36-times-bigger world with proper verticality and flight could genuinely reshape how MMORPG exploration feels, but NC has to stick the landing on server stability and content depth to keep players around past September."
