Chemistry Ignites: US Wing-Backs Click in Statement Win Over Senegal

When Sergiño Dest finished from close range in the fifth minute of Sunday's match, it capped a movement that revealed something crucial about the United States men's national team heading into the World Cup. The goal wasn't a moment of individual brilliance. It was the product of teammates moving in concert, a sequence of 20 passes strung together in 64 seconds that showed the USMNT operating at a higher level of coordination than it has managed in recent months.

The opening goal against Senegal in a 3-2 victory was built on the foundation of a partnership that had been unavailable to manager Mauricio Pochettino until now. For the first time since taking charge, Pochettino fielded Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest as starting wing-backs together. The impact was immediate and pronounced.

Both Robinson and Dest had been cornerstones of the 2022 World Cup run. Both had continued to perform well at their clubs when healthy, Robinson at Fulham and Dest at PSV Eindhoven. But health has been elusive. Dest suffered a torn ACL before the 2024 Copa América while Robinson missed much of the fall with knee problems, leaving their partnership untested under Pochettino's watch.

The reunion mattered. Robinson and Dest operate differently but complement each other. Robinson is measured and positionally sound, comfortable holding the touchline and dropping into midfield spaces when needed. Dest is more dynamic, ranging across the field to find angles and opportunities. Both excel in quick combinations and can form passing triangles with midfielders, forwards, and defenders alike.

That versatility was on full display during the opening sequence. Ricardo Pepi, making his first start since November 2024, pressed Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw into a hurried clearance. From there, the US orchestrated an extended possession with Dest pushing into the attacking line while right center-back Alex Freeman shifted wide to assume a traditional right-back station. Freeman, a 21-year-old whose rapid progression from the Orlando City academy to Villarreal represents one of the most important developments in the current US player pool, carries exceptional vision and understands how to weaponize the freedom that comes with a wide center-back role.

With Freeman occupying the touchline, space opened for Robinson to receive the ball on the opposite flank. Christian Pulisic and Pepi adjusted their positioning to offer Robinson an outlet. When Krépin Diatta closed Robinson's lane, the wing-back played Pepi into the channel. Pepi then demonstrated his value as a hold-up forward, spotting Pulisic making a direct run through the middle with minimal defensive traffic ahead. Pepi threaded a pass through converging defenders with precision, using a Cruyff turn he had learned during his time in the Dutch league.

Pulisic burst into space and delivered a low cross. Dest, who had drifted wide to support the buildup, powered the ball home. The final four passes from that point took the US from inside its own half to a tap-in in just ten seconds. Such sequences require chemistry that can only be built through repetition and time together.

Pochettino's tenure has been marked by constant rotation as he assessed his options. That churn has produced some valuable discoveries, like Freeman and backup left-back Max Arfsten, but it has also created a deficit in cohesion. Without established patterns and partnerships, the team has struggled to develop a clear tactical identity. Glimpses of that vulnerability appeared later against Senegal. After the US had built a 2-0 lead, Robinson attempted a one-two with Tyler Adams, a pairing that hadn't started together since November 2024. The pass was under-hit, Senegal intercepted, and Sadio Mané's first goal followed within two passes.

Yet the broader picture from Sunday offered genuine encouragement. The returnees from the 2022 World Cup run are rebuilding those combinations while integrating newcomers like Freeman. Pressing and off-ball movement require precisely the kind of connection on display during Dest's goal. As the US prepares for group-stage fixtures against Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey, that cohesion will prove essential. Senegal positioned its defense higher than those opponents likely will, creating the spaces that led to the opening goal. Against lower blocks, the US will need to be sharper and more incisive.

For now, momentum is building. Pulisic is contributing in the final third. The team has recorded a second top-12 victory in its last four games. And with Robinson and Dest functioning as a unit at last, the wide areas that have been underdeveloped throughout Pochettino's reign are beginning to open again, exactly when the tournament hosts need them most.

Author James Rodriguez: "That opening goal proved Pochettino can build something cohesive when his best players finally get time on the pitch together, but he can't afford many more absences before the tournament truly matters."
