Path of Exile 2 0.5.0 overhauls endgame, adds new classes as league launches

Path of Exile 2's biggest patch yet has arrived with a complete remake of how players will experience the late game. Patch 0.5.0, titled Return of the Ancients, introduces a reworked endgame structure built around new questlines, dedicated Atlas regions, and interactions with the Masters of the Atlas, who help customize farming strategies.

The update rolls out alongside the Runes of Aldur Challenge League, which features a new mechanic centered on Ezomyte Remnants. Players encounter monsters guarding these relics, and defeating them grants access to a choice of rewards. The twist: selecting a reward resurrects those monsters with buffs matching the player's choice, forcing another confrontation to claim the loot.

Two new Ascendancy classes debut in the patch. The Huntress gains the Spirit Walker Ascendancy, which emphasizes animal companions with the unusual ability to tame bosses as allies. The Monk class receives the Martial Artist Ascendancy, built around unarmed combat, mirages, bells, and the new Fists of Stone skill.

With fresh Skill and Support Gems arriving alongside new Runeforging mechanics, the patch reshapes viable build strategies across the game. Maxroll has updated existing build guides to reflect the changes and released new recommendations for both league starters and endgame progression.

For players uncertain which Ascendancy to commit to at league start, the updated League Starter Ascendancy Tier List ranks the most powerful and popular options, complete with links to full build guides. The list categorizes choices by playstyle preference: raw damage output, defensive scaling, or content progression potential.

Current recommended builds span multiple classes and strategies. Damage dealers can try Bleed Rake Amazon, Cold Spark Pathfinder, or the newly viable Spirit Walker Twisters. Minion-focused players have options like Cold Minion Lich, Minion Army Infernalist, and Skeletal Sniper Infernalist. Defensive builds include Shield Wall Titan and Entangle Oracle, while bow users can pursue Ice Shot Deadeye or Lightning Arrow Deadeye.

More build updates are expected to roll out through launch day and in the weeks following the league's release, as players and theorycrafters discover new synergies with the patch's changes.

Author Emily Chen: "With the endgame completely rebuilt and two new Ascendancies in the mix, 0.5.0 feels like a genuine reset for PoE2, not just another balance patch."
