IO Interactive's 007 First Light has stormed onto the market with 1.5 million copies sold in its opening 24 hours, marking the fastest launch in the studio's history and outpacing every Hitman release the developer has produced.
The James Bond adventure achieved this milestone without the Nintendo Switch 2 version, which launches later this summer. The game's critical reception has matched its commercial momentum, earning an 87 on Metacritic and an 88 on OpenCritic, making it the highest-rated title IO Interactive has ever released.
Steam emerged as a particular powerhouse for the title, with market analyst Rhys Elliott estimating around 500,000 copies sold on Valve's platform alone, generating approximately $25 million in revenue. The performance demonstrates how traditionally console-focused games can find substantial audiences on PC storefronts.
"The Steam performance really stood out for this one," Elliott said. "It's the latest example of a traditionally 'console' game doing fantastic numbers on Steam." About a third of Steam players who picked up 007 First Light had also played Hitman titles, suggesting the game attracted both franchise loyalists and newcomers.
IO Interactive released a statement celebrating the achievement. "The milestone of 1.5 million units sold in 24 hours reflects overwhelming global enthusiasm for 007 First Light and represents a significant achievement for IO Interactive," the developer said. The studio emphasized that the game has resonated with both critics and players globally, positioning it as one of 2026's top gaming releases.
For Amazon, which owns the Bond franchise rights and licensed IO Interactive to develop the game, the early results signal a genuine turnaround for a property that has languished without a quality adaptation in years. Elliott noted that the studio appears to have delivered a release with serious staying power in the commercial landscape.
The first-day sales figures set an impressive baseline, though context matters in the gaming industry. Crimson Desert achieved 2 million sales in its opening day last March before climbing to 5 million within a month, illustrating how launch momentum can translate into sustained success over time.
IO Interactive has indicated ambitions to extend the Bond license beyond a single game. The developer previously stated it wants to develop a trilogy of James Bond titles, suggesting 007 First Light is intended as the foundation for a longer franchise relationship.
Author Emily Chen: "This is what happens when a studio that understands single-player campaigns gets handed one of entertainment's most bankable properties, and actually delivers something worthy of the license."
