Infinity Ward is making meaningful quality-of-life improvements to Call of Duty with Modern Warfare 4, tackling two persistent frustrations that have dogged the franchise.
The biggest shift is that the campaign will finally work offline. For years, losing internet connection or facing server downtime meant players couldn't access the single-player experience at all, a limitation that became painfully obvious during the PlayStation Network's major outage. Modern Warfare 4 eliminates this headache entirely.
The studio is also scrapping the dreaded "update requires restart" loop that has plagued Call of Duty for roughly six years. Loading up a modern Call of Duty game often triggers a forced reboot to apply updates, chewing up several minutes before you can actually play. It's a friction point almost unique to the franchise. Modern Warfare 4 aims to streamline this process and get players into the action faster.
Beyond these fixes, the new entry marks a generational shift for the series. It's skipping last-gen consoles entirely but arriving on Nintendo Switch 2, marking the franchise's first appearance on a Nintendo platform since 2013. The Switch 2 version will have full feature parity with its current-gen counterparts. The trade-off is that Warzone support on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ends this fall, closing a chapter for players still on older hardware.
Early impressions suggest the game feels liberated from the constraints of older technology. Without being shackled to last-gen limitations, Modern Warfare 4 reads as "a confident step forward for the series," shedding ideas and code that have held it back.
The campaign takes players across multiple locations but centers on escalating tensions between North and South Korea. Captain Price grapples with the consequences of his decisions at the end of Modern Warfare 3, creating friction within Task Force 141. Whether these narrative beats land meaningfully remains to be seen, but the structural improvements and fresh creative direction are working in the game's favor.
