Activision has lifted the curtain on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the franchise's next major installment arriving this October with a significant platform expansion. The shooter will launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026, marking the first day-one appearance of a mainline Call of Duty title on Nintendo's new hardware.
The campaign takes place during a full-scale invasion of South Korea, a departure from recent settings. Players follow Private Park, a young Korean soldier thrown into his first combat experience alongside his squad as they face overwhelming odds. Captain Price also features prominently, stepping outside official channels to form a rogue alliance separate from Task Force 141. The story spans missions in Korea, New York, Paris, and includes an SAS night raid in Mumbai. Infinity Ward, the studio behind the Modern Warfare sub-series, is leading development with an emphasis on what Activision calls a return to the franchise's roots: dark storytelling, cinematic sequences, and immersive gameplay.
The game arrives with three core modes. Multiplayer launches with 12 new 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight arenas, and multiple Big War maps for vehicle and infantry combat. A standout addition is Kill Block, a dynamic battleground that reshapes itself between rounds with over 500 possible configurations, constantly shifting sightlines, routes, and cover to force player adaptation. The mode supports expanded Gunfight formats including 3v3 and 10v10 matches, with additional modes coming post-launch.
Weapon handling receives a fundamental overhaul. Hipfire no longer features weapon bloom, a mechanic that previously created spread on shots fired from the hip. Activision says this change means "every shot tells the truth," creating gunplay that feels more responsive and predictable. Movement options have been expanded with improved mantling, climbing, hanging, and jumping mechanics.
The Create-a-Class system has been redesigned to unify Operators, weapons, equipment, and killstreaks into a single loadout interface, streamlining access to different tactical builds. The Prestige system offers two paths: Classic Prestige delivers the traditional reset experience with boosted XP rates and exclusive rewards, while Regular Prestige allows players to restart at Level 1 without losing their unlocked loadouts, catering to those who prefer maintaining progression flexibility.
DMZ, the extraction mode, returns as the franchise's answer to the tactical survival shooter format. Players deploy solo or in squads into shifting conflict zones to recover military technology while managing weather changes, dynamic objectives, and hostile forces. The mode emphasizes choice over linearity: loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract whatever fits in your inventory. Activision plans to reveal more details during the Xbox Games Showcase in June.
The Switch 2 version is being developed in partnership with Digital Legends, the Barcelona-based Activision studio that previously worked on the discontinued Call of Duty Warzone Mobile. Beenox is handling the PC version, continuing its long involvement with Call of Duty's desktop ports. Crossplay is confirmed across all platforms.
The October 23 release date positions Modern Warfare 4 a full month ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6, a strategic window for Activision to capture player attention before Rockstar's juggernaut arrives. Microsoft has set the standard edition at $70, maintaining the previous generation's pricing despite industry pressure to raise it higher. The Vault Edition carries a $100 price tag.
Notably absent from launch day is Game Pass inclusion. Under new Xbox leadership, Microsoft decided to delay Game Pass access for new Call of Duty releases by a year, a shift aimed at rebuilding the franchise's perceived value among hardcore players while supporting the $70 price point.
Author Emily Chen: "Launching on Switch 2 day one is a masterstroke for Call of Duty's reach, but the real test is whether DMZ can deliver the extraction experience fans have been waiting for since Warzone Mobile died."
