Call of Duty: Warzone Pulls Plug on PS4 and Xbox One

Activision is officially shutting down Call of Duty: Warzone for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, marking the end of support for last-generation consoles as the franchise moves exclusively to current-gen hardware.

The cutoff coincides with the October 23 launch of Modern Warfare 4, which will arrive only on PC, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no version of the new title for PS4 or Xbox One.

Warzone players on older consoles have a specific timeline to prepare. Starting June 4, the battle royale will no longer be available for new downloads on PS4 and Xbox One, though existing players can continue playing until Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 begins shortly after launch. That's when Warzone will integrate with the new game's content and seasonal progression, and last-gen console access will be completely cut off.

The in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will shut down even earlier, on June 25. Activision confirmed that some Call of Duty microtransactions will also become unavailable on those platforms. Players can still earn free Battle Pass tiers during the transition period, including unlocking weapons from remaining Black Ops 7 seasons.

The move reflects the aging hardware: PS4 and Xbox One are now nearly 13 years old. For a live-service game like Warzone that shares seasonal content with Modern Warfare 4, maintaining separate development tracks for last-gen consoles would strain resources. The decision was likely inevitable once Activision committed to current-gen exclusivity for the new mainline title.

What makes this transition notable is the timing. Warzone launched in early 2020, before the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S even existed. The free-to-play battle royale became a cultural phenomenon across all platforms during that window, drawing millions of players to last-gen consoles. Now, with Modern Warfare 4 on the horizon, that era is officially ending.

Author Emily Chen: "Last-gen consoles held Warzone together during its defining years, and cutting them loose feels like closing a chapter on where modern Call of Duty really took off."
