IO Interactive has planted hints about what comes next for 007 First Light. After completing the campaign, players will spot an in-game ad in the main menu promoting the Valhalla Protocol, a fresh addition to TacSim, the game's challenge mode.
The Valhalla Protocol centers on the Aston Martin that makes a brief appearance in the story. Rather than a throwaway reference, the new content will expand that vehicle into a full playable experience, complete with an open course designed for driving, shooting, and destruction. It marks a notable shift for TacSim, which currently consists entirely of on-foot spy missions.
The existing challenge mode has only a handful of levels, all built around Bond completing objectives while moving through environments. 007 First Light itself features driving sequences, but they are sparse and heavily scripted. A full vehicular mission would represent something different. No launch window has been announced yet for the Valhalla Protocol.
IO Interactive has a proven track record with post-launch content through the Hitman franchise, where the studio has maintained years of ongoing updates and additions. Whether 007 First Light will receive that same level of long-term commitment is still unknown, though the Valhalla Protocol teases suggest support is already in motion.
The game has landed strongly in the market since its release. Critics have embraced it widely, with reviewers comparing it favorably to GoldenEye in terms of overall quality and execution. Reception has been overwhelmingly positive, though sales figures remain to be seen.
IO Interactive has publicly stated an ambition to develop a full trilogy of Bond games. What remains unclear is whether First Light's commercial performance will be strong enough to justify that commitment. For now, the studio appears committed to keeping players engaged with fresh content, and the Aston Martin mission could be the first of several surprises heading to TacSim.
Author Emily Chen: "The Valhalla Protocol is exactly what a Bond game needs, but one update doesn't prove IO Interactive is in it for the long haul like they were with Hitman."
