Bungie is rolling out a free trial for Marathon starting June 2nd, giving players a week to test the extraction shooter before committing to a purchase. The trial runs through June 9th on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with all progress carrying forward to the full game.
The move signals urgency. Marathon launched to soft sales and underwhelming player counts, putting pressure on a studio that has staked its future on the title. Bungie is doubling down on Season 2, which will inject more PvE content into a game that has leaned heavily on competitive modes. The extraction shooter genre has proven popular with hardcore players, but the premise intimidates casual audiences. By expanding the PvE offering, Bungie is attempting to broaden the appeal.
The gunplay in Marathon has earned praise. The game received a 9/10 review, described as "a ruthless and unforgiving extraction shooter that's worth every ounce of hell it puts you through." Strong fundamentals alone may not be enough, though.
Destiny 2 is ending live-service support in June, forcing Bungie to redirect all resources toward Marathon. The studio is not actively developing Destiny 3 and has no other titles in production. This concentration of effort reflects both opportunity and risk. Sony, which acquired Bungie in 2022, will likely scrutinize future projects given the high costs of game development at the studio's scale. The next major Bungie release beyond Marathon is unlikely to arrive before the 2030s.
Layoffs are expected in the coming weeks and months as Bungie adjusts its workforce in the wake of Destiny 2's shutdown. Some players have protested the move, though the impact remains unclear. The studio faces a critical juncture: Marathon must become a sustainable franchise, or Bungie risks losing confidence from its parent company.
Author Emily Chen: "The free trial is smart positioning, but it won't matter if the game can't retain players long term, and with Destiny 2 gone and nothing else in the pipeline, Marathon is now carrying the entire studio on its shoulders."
