CD Projekt Red is bringing players back to monster hunting with Songs of the Past, a new expansion for The Witcher 3 launching in 2027. The studio announced the DLC alongside news that it will co-develop the content with Fool's Theory, a team of industry veterans who contributed to the original game's creation.
The announcement marks a significant moment for a title that has already sold 60 million copies since its 2015 debut. Blood and Wine, the last major expansion, shipped in 2016, making this new DLC the first substantial content drop in over a decade. The expansion will deploy across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Players will resume control of Geralt of Rivia for what CD Projekt describes as a brand new adventure. The studio has committed to sharing additional details in late summer 2026, leaving fans with a lengthy wait before the full scope of the expansion becomes clear.
CD Projekt also revealed that system requirements will be updated ahead of the new content's rollout to maintain smooth performance and compatibility. Those adjustments take effect with the next update to the game.
The studio's decision to reveal the expansion on its RED Launcher raised eyebrows. In a post to press, CD Projekt acknowledged the timing, noting that it had originally planned to unveil Songs of the Past during a special anniversary stream for Blood and Wine scheduled for May 28. The company said it discovered something unexpected on the launcher that prompted an earlier announcement.
The news arrives as CD Projekt continues work on The Witcher 4, with the company cautioning that launch won't happen before 2027 at the earliest. The studio has outlined an ambitious six-year roadmap that includes development of The Witcher 5 and The Witcher 6 as well.
For Cyberpunk fans, the outlook differs sharply. CD Projekt has ruled out additional DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, signaling that players will need to wait for a full sequel to return to Night City. Cyberpunk 2 sits further back in the development pipeline than The Witcher 4, with co-CEO MichaĆ Nowakowski suggesting the game won't arrive before 2030.
The Cyberpunk universe is still expanding beyond games, however. CD Projekt announced a panel dedicated to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3 at 7.30pm PT, offering fans a preview of the anticipated standalone series.
Author Emily Chen: "Asking players to wait 12 years for new Witcher 3 content feels bold, but if Fool's Theory can capture even half the magic of Blood and Wine, it might actually be worth it."
