IO Interactive just revealed that James Bond will encounter TikTok sensation Khaby Lame in the upcoming spy thriller 007 First Light, and the internet reaction has been as mixed as a shaken martini.
The cameo appears in Vietnam during the game's opening mission. In a video posted to Instagram, Bond approaches Lame asking for directions while standing directly in front of a signpost that clearly displays the answer. Lame responds with his signature deadpan gesture, an exasperated wave that has become his trademark on social media. The moment plays out like a comedy sketch: Bond, the world's most sophisticated spy, apparently stumbling right past obvious navigation.
"You will meet a familiar face in Vietnam," IO Interactive wrote in their announcement. "Khaby Lame joins the cast of 007 First Light and is part of a globetrotting adventure as James Bond sets out to #EarnTheNumber. We worked closely with Khaby to get him scanned and design his outfit for this re-imagined origin story."
The reveal has sparked debate among Bond fans, who expressed surprise not just at Lame's inclusion but at the decision to spoil the cameo before launch. Gaming industry analyst Daniel Ahmad weighed in on social media, suggesting the early reveal targeted a broader audience beyond traditional Bond enthusiasts. With the game's early access launching today and a full release tomorrow, IO Interactive appears to be swinging for younger, social media savvy players who may not have grown up with 007 films.
Lame's star has risen dramatically over the past few years. The content creator holds the distinction of being TikTok's most-followed user, a position he's leveraged into mainstream media appearances. He featured in Fortnite's 2023 battle pass, judged on Italy's Got Talent that same year, and made a cameo in the Will Smith action sequel Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024. Earlier this year, Lame inked a licensing deal to allow AI reproductions of his likeness for nearly $1 billion.
007 First Light's opening mission leaked to the public days before launch, forcing IO Interactive to release an official clip. The game's early access begins today, May 26, with the full release scheduled for May 27.
Author Emily Chen: "Putting Lame front and center before launch feels like a calculated reach for Gen Z eyeballs, though it definitely took the sting out of discovering his scene organically."
