Hasbro Kills Dungeons & Dragons Game from Star Wars Jedi Director

Hasbro has canceled a Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game developed by Giant Skull, the studio led by director Stig Asmussen. The decision came to light through reporting from Bloomberg, which obtained confirmation from both the publisher and the developer.

Asmussen, known for directing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and God of War 3, launched Giant Skull after departing Respawn Entertainment in 2023. The studio had announced the D&D project last June with considerable fanfare, positioning it as a landmark title for both companies' gaming strategies.

Hasbro's statement to Bloomberg struck a diplomatic tone. A company spokesperson said the publisher decided "not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull" while emphasizing respect for Asmussen's team and commitment to the ongoing relationship. Asmussen echoed that sentiment, saying "things are good at Giant Skull" and expressing openness to future partnerships with either Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast division or other publishers.

The specific reasons behind the cancellation remain undisclosed. Few details about the game itself had emerged beyond its genre classification and its place in the broader D&D universe.

Asmussen built his reputation across two decades in action games. He started as an artist on the original God of War trilogy at Santa Monica Studio before becoming creative director on the third installment. His 2014 move to Respawn yielded two commercially and critically successful Star Wars Jedi games, establishing him as a major force in single-player action design.

The cancellation raises questions about Giant Skull's next move. Wizards of the Coast itself is preparing to launch Exodus, a sci-fi title slated for 2027, which the division has positioned as a significant release.

Respawn's third Star Wars Jedi game remains in development, though details remain scarce. Some industry observers have speculated about a potential reveal in 2025 for a 2027 launch, but nothing official has been announced.

Author Emily Chen: "A surprising stumble for a director with Asmussen's pedigree, but the mutual respect in the statement suggests this is a strategic reset rather than a relationship breakdown."
