TikTok's Algorithm Steered Young Voters Toward Republican Content in 2024, Study Reveals

TikTok's recommendation engine systematically amplified pro-Republican political content during the 2024 election cycle, according to research published Wednesday in Nature. The finding reignites debate about how social media algorithms shape political information flows to voters, particularly young adults who increasingly rely on the platform.

Researchers at New York University's Abu Dhabi campus created hundreds of fake accounts and trained them to mimic real users by watching videos aligned with either Democratic or Republican politics. They then tracked what TikTok's algorithm recommended on these accounts' For You pages over 27 weeks of the presidential campaign, analyzing more than 280,000 videos across three states: New York, Texas, and Georgia.

The results showed a consistent tilt. Accounts conditioned on pro-Republican content saw about 11.5% more videos agreeing with their political orientation compared to pro-Democratic accounts. The asymmetry cut both ways: accounts trained on Democratic content were 7.5% more likely to encounter pro-Republican material on their feeds.

More striking than simple reinforcement was what researchers called a targeted attack pattern. Democratic-aligned accounts received disproportionately more cross-partisan content on immigration and crime, issues where Republicans have cultivated political advantage. Republican accounts, conversely, saw more opposing content on abortion. This suggests the algorithm may be optimized to serve voters opposing viewpoints designed to hit weak points in their preferred party's platform.

"The algorithm wasn't just giving people what they want," said Talal Rahwan, one of the study's authors. "It was giving one side more of what the other side says about them."

The timing matters. Young voters aged 18 to 29 shifted roughly 10 percentage points toward Donald Trump between the 2020 and 2024 elections, and about 42% of American social media users say these platforms influence their political engagement, according to Pew Research. The demographic cohort relies heavily on TikTok for political information, making algorithmic bias potentially consequential.

TikTok disputed the findings, claiming the experiment used artificial conditions that don't reflect how real people use the platform. "In reality, people discover and watch a wide variety of content on our platform which they continuously shape and can control through more than a dozen tools the authors seem unaware of," the company said in a statement.

The researchers acknowledged their study's limits. The dummy accounts captured only early user experiences and analyzed English-language transcripts, missing visual political cues and non-English content. The findings were confined to three specific states and involved only 323 fake accounts. The study also does not measure whether algorithmic skew actually changed voters' behavior or beliefs.

Yet the authors argue those limits don't undermine the core finding. Unlike other major platforms, TikTok's For You page is almost entirely algorithm-driven, giving users minimal control compared to feeds on Facebook or Instagram. This setup creates what researchers call a "uniquely clean setting" for isolating algorithmic influence, since users can't simply choose who to follow or curate their experience through subscriptions.

Ibrahim, a PhD student on the project, emphasized the stakes: "In an environment where margins are thin, systematic differences in the kind of political information recommended to tens of millions of young voters are worth taking seriously."

The regulatory backdrop adds weight to the concern. The European Union's Digital Services Act requires large platforms to assess and mitigate risks to electoral integrity. The United States grants social media companies far broader editorial discretion under the First Amendment, leaving algorithmic accountability largely in platforms' hands.
