Magic: The Gathering's 2026 calendar is locked in, and it tells a clear story about where Wizards of the Coast is placing its bets. Seven full sets are coming, starting in January and running through November, with four of them being Universes Beyond collaborations that reach far outside the game's traditional fantasy universe.
The year opens with Lorwyn Eclipsed on January 23, a return to the beloved plane that fans have been asking for. It marks the debut of the Draft Night Box and brings back Commander deck variants, a feature absent since August's Edge of Eternities. Two options will launch: Dance of the Elements and Blight Curse.
March brings Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a crossover that Wizards revealed at Comic-Con New York. The set will feature new art treatments of the Heroes in a Half Shell and their rogues gallery, plus a debut co-op game mode called Turtle Team Up. A five-color Commander deck starring all four Turtles rounds out the Commander offerings for this release.
April 24 sees Secrets of Strixhaven arrive with five new Commander precons and fresh mechanics. Early reception has been strong, with many cards already positioned as long-term staples in various formats.
Marvel and Middle-earth Lead the Crossover Push
June 26 brings Marvel Super Heroes, the follow-up to 2025's Spider-Man set. This time, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Fantastic Four, and other heroes are joining the multiverse. The expanded roster and inclusion of villains aim to improve on the reception Spider-Man received. Four Commander Precons and a new Beginner Box are part of the lineup, all available for preorder now.
August marks a return to Middle-earth with The Hobbit set. Universes Beyond: Lord of the Rings proved to be a breakout hit for the game, and the fantasy setting aligned well enough with Magic's core identity that players embraced it. This new set includes Scene Box products and Collector Booster packs, though Commander decks are not part of this release.
October splits the spotlight between two releases. Reality Fracture is an in-universe set offering a 'What If?' concept featuring classic Planeswalkers in new colors. Expect callbacks to Tarkir: Dragonstorm and Outlaws of Thunder Junction, with possibilities like Blue Chandra shaking up established color identities. Preorders are live.
Also in October, Foundations returns. Originally launched in 2024 as a Standard-focused set, this edition targets Commander players with mono-colored decks. No booster packs, but preorders have opened.
November closes out the year with Star Trek, a celebration of the franchise's 60th anniversary. The set spans everything from the original series to Strange New Worlds and even includes a promotional trailer.
The crossover strategy reflects 2025's divide in the player base. While Final Fantasy broke player records and Avatar: The Last Airbender recovered some ground after Spider-Man disappointed, parts of the community have grown fatigued by the constant flow of outside IP. Four Universes Beyond sets in 2026 suggests Wizards believes the model still drives engagement, despite the mixed sentiment.
All of these sets are now available for preorder or have already hit shelves, giving players and collectors months to plan their purchases.
Author Emily Chen: "Four Universes Beyond sets in one year is aggressive, and whether 2026 becomes a breakout success or fuels more franchise fatigue will determine the tone of Magic's next chapter."
