Dan Frazier, a veteran Magic: The Gathering artist with three decades in the game, has confessed to using another artist's illustration as a reference and painting over it when creating a new version of The One Ring for an upcoming Hobbit-themed set.
The controversy erupted after Wizards of the Coast unveiled plans for the Middle-earth collection. Fans quickly spotted troubling similarities between Frazier's newly commissioned One Ring art and an earlier version drawn by Marta Nael for a 2023 Lord of the Rings release. The positioning of the ring and its reflections appeared nearly identical, prompting Reddit users to post detailed side-by-side comparisons questioning whether Frazier had simply mirrored Nael's work.
Frazier acknowledged the accusation head-on in a statement released via social media. "I made a mistake, and I feel awful," he wrote. "In trying to create an iconic version of The One Ring, while looking at references online, I ended up using Marta's ring as a reference and painted over it to try to depict the item fans hold dear to their hearts. In doing so, I didn't make it my own."
He added that he held Nael's work in high regard and said he would reach out to apologize directly to her as a fellow artist.
Wizards of the Coast issued its own statement, acknowledging the breach. The company said it was "disappointed" that its internal review process failed to catch the problem before the card went public. The publisher confirmed it has already contacted Nael to apologize and will compensate her for the unauthorized use of her artwork. Digital versions of the card will carry Nael's credit going forward.
In a broader message to the Magic community, Wizards of the Coast framed the incident as a moment of accountability. "This is a good moment to recognize that we are all humans who make mistakes," the statement read. "We made mistakes in our process to not catch the error." The company said it remains grateful for Frazier's contributions to the game over his long career, even as it acknowledged the misstep.
The Hobbit set is scheduled to arrive in August, with Marvel Super Heroes and Star Trek expansions also planned for later in the year.
Author Emily Chen: "A seasoned pro screwing up on this scale is surprising, but at least everyone involved admitted it fast and Nael is getting paid. The real question is whether Wizards' vetting process was actually this loose or if this is just one slip among many."
