Ubisoft has made it abundantly clear that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced will not transform the beloved 2013 pirate adventure into a role-playing game, despite overhauling its combat systems and adding UI customization options.
In a detailed breakdown of the remake's changes, the publisher stressed that health bars, defense meters, and other visual updates do not fundamentally alter the game's genre or identity. "Although health and defense bars are present in default settings, this does not change the fact that Black Flag Resynced remains an action-adventure game," Ubisoft stated. The studio emphasized that there are no character levels, gear scores, or progression gates standing between players and exploration.
Game director Richard Knight doubled down on this messaging during the game's reveal, saying the remake maintains its focus on player choice and world exploration rather than RPG mechanics. "This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG," Knight said. "The focus stays on how you play, and how you explore the world."
The repeated reassurances appear designed to manage expectations as recent Assassin's Creed titles have leaned more heavily into RPG conventions. Ubisoft seems eager to assure longtime fans that Black Flag Resynced will feel closer to the original than to the more recent, stats-heavy entries in the franchise.
The combat system in Resynced follows the foundation of the original game but introduces a new defense mechanic. Timed parries, sustained attacks, and strong hits can break an enemy's guard, leaving them vulnerable to a finishing move. Health and defense bars will display by default to help players understand this system, though both can be toggled off entirely.
Ubisoft has borrowed the customizable HUD approach from Assassin's Creed Shadows, letting players fine-tune the on-screen interface to their preference. A "Simple" preset removes non-essential elements while retaining combat and navigation aids. The "Minimal" setting strips things down further, showing only health, interaction prompts, and other critical information. Players willing to go even barebones can disable nearly everything.
Black Flag Resynced launches July 9 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A $200 Collector's Edition will include a statue of protagonist Edward Kenway, the same figure that drew attention after appearing on secondhand marketplace Vinted earlier this year. The remake arrives after years of leaks and speculation about the project's status.
Author Emily Chen: "After hammering this point repeatedly, Ubisoft clearly fears Black Flag Resynced will be mistaken for something it isn't, which says more about franchise fatigue than about the game itself."
