A remastered version of Tales of Eternia has been discovered on the European ratings board PEGI, weeks or months ahead of any formal announcement from publisher Bandai Namco. The listing confirms the classic 2000 JRPG is in the pipeline, though key details remain unclear.
Tales of Eternia originally debuted on PlayStation in 2000. Outside Japan, it was marketed as Tales of Destiny II, a naming quirk that has confused fans ever since, particularly because a different game called Tales of Destiny 2 launched in 2002. The story follows a mysterious stranger who delivers a protagonist an ominous message, setting them on a path to defend those unable to protect themselves. The game's popularity extended to anime, spawning a 13-episode series.
The PEGI rating indicates the remaster earned a PEGI 12 classification for "depictions of non-realistic looking violence towards human and fantasy characters" and mild language. But one oddity stands out: PEGI's listing only mentions Nintendo Switch as a platform. The original was a PlayStation exclusive, so whether this represents an incomplete database entry, a data error, or hints at a Switch exclusivity remains a mystery. Bandai Namco has not yet clarified the situation.
This remaster fits squarely into Bandai Namco's larger strategy. The publisher launched a formal Tales of Remastered Program last year, kicking off with Tales of Graces f. Tales of Symphonia Remastered arrived the prior year. Both games have since joined a growing catalog of refreshed entries in the franchise, including Tales of Berseria Remastered.
Not all fans are celebrating. While some welcome Eternia joining the revival lineup, others have voiced skepticism about the publisher's remaster pace. Critics have called for Bandai Namco to slow production and invest more effort into each project, with one commenter dismissing the Berseria remaster as "a joke." It remains unclear what quality-of-life features the Eternia remaster will include, such as toggleable enemy encounters, which have become standard in the publisher's more recent remasters.
Interest in Tales of the Abyss, widely considered one of the franchise's strongest entries, persists among longtime fans. When asked during the remaster program announcement whether Abyss might receive similar treatment, producer Yuki Ishikawa responded cautiously. "If [a Tales of the Abyss remaster] could happen and I could share that joy with the rest of the fans, that's something I'll work hard towards," he said at the time.
Author Emily Chen: "Rating boards leak the best surprises, but Bandai Namco's vague platform list here smells like either a clerical error or intentional misdirection ahead of an actual reveal."
