NetherRealm's Next Fighter Leaked: Injustice 3 Reportedly in Active Development

NetherRealm Studios appears to be quietly building the next installment in its DC Comics fighting game franchise. According to reports, Injustice 3 is currently in active development at the studio, marking the publisher's return to the superhero-focused series after a six-year gap.

The evidence emerged through a job resume belonging to an artist working at Warner Bros. Games, which explicitly mentioned work on Injustice 3. The discovery aligns with earlier hints from the franchise itself, as voice actors portraying Superman and Aquaman have previously teased their involvement in a sequel.

NetherRealm has remained publicly silent on its post-Mortal Kombat 1 plans, though studio head Ed Boon dropped a significant clue in September 2024. He disclosed that the team had locked in its next project back in 2021, well before the latest Mortal Kombat title shipped. At that time, Boon stressed the studio's continued dedication to supporting Mortal Kombat 1.

That commitment proved short-lived. Warner Bros. Games announced in 2024 that Mortal Kombat 1 would receive no additional story content or character DLC, a decision that angered the competitive community and signaled the fighting game's end of life.

The return to Injustice makes strategic sense given NetherRealm's historical output. The original Injustice: Gods Among Us debuted in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 four years later in 2017. The studio had established a rhythm of alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice releases, but that pattern broke when it launched Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then Mortal Kombat 1 as a 2023 reboot. A new Injustice entry is overdue by that timeline.

When an announcement might arrive remains unclear. NetherRealm has offered no official confirmation or timeline, and the studio is currently focused on the theatrical release of Mortal Kombat 2. Fans hoping for news soon may have to wait, though industry expectations suggest an unveiling could come sometime in the next year or two.

Author Emily Chen: "The leak feels inevitable at this point, but NetherRealm's radio silence on what's next is remarkable considering how invested players were in both franchises."
