David Hayter spent nearly two decades voicing one of gaming's most iconic characters, but that didn't mean he could always understand what was happening in the games he was starring in. The actor who brought Snake to life across the original Metal Gear Solid through Peace Walker recently admitted that Hideo Kojima's labyrinthine narratives have left him just as confused as everyone else.
"Do I understand all of it? Absolutely not," Hayter said during an interview on Fall Damage when asked about his grasp of the series' storyline. He recalled moments on set where he would ask for clarification on plot points, only to be told simply to deliver the lines without worrying about the meaning. "I'd be like, 'What does this mean?' and they'd say, 'Just say it.'"
Despite the confusion, Hayter doesn't see the impenetrable complexity as a flaw. He argues that the overwhelming density of information and character detail is precisely what transforms Metal Gear from a straightforward action game into something with genuine depth. "There's more information," he explained. "There's more character development. There's more detail to the story than you can ever possibly absorb, no matter how many times you play it. That's what makes the world feel real and rich and lovable."
The revelation comes after a period of genuine tension between Hayter and Kojima. When the creator cast Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland to voice the protagonist in 2015's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Hayter felt the sting of replacement. He initially refused to play the game, fearing the experience would feel like "60 hours of humiliation." His bitterness was palpable at the time. "I've got no particular love for Kojima," he said then. "I don't feel any need to go back and work with him again."
Time changed his perspective. A decade passed, and Hayter eventually decided to move past his wounded feelings. "There was reluctance," he reflected. "I didn't want to play the game because I figured it would hurt my feelings. Then, you know, 10 years went by and I was like, 'Ah, to hell with my feelings.'"
Hayter framed his eventual acceptance in pragmatic terms. As a screenwriter accustomed to the realities of the entertainment industry, he recognized that getting fired from projects was simply part of the job. "I literally, eventually, get fired from every single gig that I've got, and I'm not a child," he said. "I was like, 'Stop being a baby and play the game.' So I played it. It's amazing."
Author Emily Chen: "The fact that the man who voiced Snake for nearly 20 years couldn't follow the story validates what fans have been saying all along: Kojima's ambition regularly outpaces clarity, but somehow that's exactly what makes it work."
