Charlie Cox has a casting proposal for the upcoming Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 live-action film: Robert Pattinson should play the hero Gustave, while Cox himself returns to voice the character.
The actor, who provides Gustave's voice in the acclaimed video game, made the suggestion while speaking at the BAFTA Games Awards 2026. Cox noted that pairing Pattinson's performance with his own voice would essentially recreate the version of Gustave that players already know.
"My involvement with this, as minuscule as it was originally and how it's now expanded so much, has been nothing but an incredibly humbling and enjoyable experience," Cox told GamesRadar+. "So, yeah, absolutely, yeah. I was thinking that they should probably if they make the movie they should get Robert Pattinson to play the part, and I should do the voice. Because then they would have pretty much the exact Gustave from the game."
The physical resemblance between Gustave and Pattinson has long fueled fan speculation about the character's design. Developer Sandfall Interactive has consistently stated that Gustave was modeled after one of its own employees, with a distinctive mustache added to the character.
Cox's involvement in the game has been a point of some clarification over the past year. While he provides the voice acting, he does not perform the motion capture work or contribute his likeness to the character, a distinction Cox has had to frequently emphasize despite widespread recognition for his vocal performance.
A live-action movie adaptation of Clair Obscur was confirmed before the game's release. Sandfall Interactive partnered with Story Kitchen, the production company responsible for the Sonic the Hedgehog films and the forthcoming Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones. The studio has not announced casting details or a release timeline for the film.
Clair Obscur had a strong showing at the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, winning Best Game, Debut Game, and Performer in a Leading Role for Jennifer English, who voices another character in the title.
Author Emily Chen: "Cox's idea is cheeky and self-aware, but it also highlights how much the game's character work transcends a single performance element."
