Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced arrived this week to an unusual fanfare: control of social media accounts across the gaming industry, from rivals to fast food chains, all suddenly posting about the pirate adventure.
The coordinated campaign saw Dead by Daylight, Control, and hardware maker SteelSeries join the promotional push by having their social accounts taken over with Black Flag messaging. Epic Games Store rebranded its profile picture and banner with pirate-themed imagery tied to the remaster. McDonald's jumped in with a sailing reference, posting about being ready to hit the high seas with a callback to the game's branding.
The participating accounts used similar language, claiming they'd been "boarded" while displaying the game's signature black pirate flag. Ubisoft's own franchises like Watch Dogs, Rabbids, and For Honor also participated in the stunt, though those accounts sit under the same corporate umbrella, making their involvement less surprising than outside partners lending their platforms.
The scope of the collaboration raises questions about how Ubisoft convinced unaffiliated gaming companies to hand over their social channels for the promotion. It's an aggressive but creative approach that has generated player discussion and generated visibility across platforms that would typically compete for attention.
Assassin's Creed also distributed a redemption code offering players a free pet monkey to roam their ship during gameplay, adding a tangible reward to the marketing push. IGN rated the remaster 9 out of 10, describing it as "more than just a shinier version of the same game you remember," noting that it updates the original to modern standards while maintaining what made the title stand out in the franchise.
Black Flag Resynced is available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
Author Emily Chen: "Hijacking other studios' Twitter accounts is either brilliant marketing or a complete overreach, depending on who you ask, but it definitely got people talking about a game that didn't need much help."
