Sony Santa Monica is expanding the God of War universe far beyond Scandinavia and ancient Greece. The next installment will draw from multiple mythological traditions rather than anchoring itself to a single pantheon, according to reporting by MP1st.
The game is confirmed to incorporate Chinese and Japanese mythological elements. Speculation has also circled about Mayan influences, though that detail remains unverified. The shift marks a significant departure from the studio's previous approach, which alternated between Greek and Norse storytelling.
According to sources cited by IGN, the unannounced project will center on Faye, Kratos' wife who died in God of War Ragnarök. Deborah Ann Woll, known for her role in Daredevil, voiced the character in the previous game. Leaker NatetheHate has claimed Sony intends to reveal the project this year, with a planned 2027 launch.
The direction suggests a more action-intensive experience compared to recent entries. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier previously hinted that Sony Santa Monica's next work would be "not a new IP but it might feel like one," signaling a creative reinvention while maintaining franchise continuity.
The announcement comes as Sony has layered multiple God of War projects into its production pipeline. February's PlayStation State of Play confirmed that Sony Santa Monica is developing a full remake of the original trilogy. A side-scrolling spinoff called God of War Sons of Sparta also launched as a surprise release, receiving mixed reviews from players.
With nearly four years elapsed since Ragnarök's launch, the studio has bandwidth to pursue the new mainline entry. The Trilogy Remake remains in early stages of development, and the spinoff was handled by another team, freeing Sony Santa Monica's core group to advance the new mythological adventure.
Author Emily Chen: "Multi-mythology God of War is either brilliant world-building or a creative mess, and Sony's betting big that players want both spectacle and depth at once."
