Laura Loomer arrived in Kyiv this week as a skeptic and left as a convert. The MAGA commentator, who has spent years amplifying Russian talking points to her 2 million social media followers, experienced a sudden and public shift in her stance on Ukraine after witnessing the war firsthand during a visit to the capital.
The transformation matters because Loomer operates at the intersection of online influence and Trump administration power. Though she has never held an official government post, her social media posts have shaped policy discussions in the second Trump term. Early on, her ability to target and discredit foreign policy officials gave her an outsized voice in national security debates, earning her comparisons to a de facto national security adviser.
During her Kyiv stay, Loomer posted about experiencing her first air raid as Russian missiles fell on the city. "This is everyday for every Ukrainian," she wrote, acknowledging her past dismissal of Ukrainian suffering. "Looking back, that wasn't very nice of me to say. There are people in Ukraine who have to run to a bomb shelter everyday and some of us had the audacity to say Russia wasn't wrong because we believed the lie that Ukraine is a country full of Nazi sympathizers."
She went further, admitting that MAGA circles had been infected by Russian propaganda that painted Putin as a defender of fundamentalist Christianity against Western secularism. That framing had shaped attitudes toward the war for years among Trump's base.
Zelenskyy took the visit seriously enough to meet with Loomer privately on Thursday. His office released a statement emphasizing the importance of having her witness the reality on the ground "as things are." The meeting itself was a calculated move to court someone whose political influence extends directly to Trump.
Loomer's reversal dovetails with a broader shift in Trump's own approach to Ukraine. When he returned to office, Trump made clear his antagonism toward Kyiv, rooted partly in the 2019 impeachment over his attempt to withhold military aid in exchange for political dirt on Joe Biden. Early in his second term, he publicly humiliated Zelenskyy, cut off direct weapons shipments, and forced European allies to buy American arms for Ukraine instead.
But Ukraine's military performance has impressed Trump. Despite reduced American support, Kyiv has slowed Russia's advance, emerged as a global leader in drone warfare, and struck Russian oil infrastructure with long-range missiles, triggering an energy crisis in one of the world's largest oil-producing nations. Trump, above all, respects winners.
That shift became visible at the NATO summit in Turkey earlier this month, when Trump announced the US would license Patriot missile technology to Ukraine for domestic production. He also backed congressional moves to impose new sanctions on Russia and appeared to soften his earlier demand that Ukraine surrender territory for peace.
Whether Loomer changed her mind independently or simply moved in lockstep with Trump remains unclear. What matters politically is whether her conversion signals a broader thaw in MAGA attitudes toward Ukraine and a recognition of how thoroughly Russian propaganda had infiltrated conservative circles. Her reversal comes at a critical moment, just after Senator Lindsey Graham's death deprived Ukraine of one of its most consistent Republican advocates in Washington.
