Scott Pilgrim Returns: Creator Breaks 16-Year Silence With New Comic

Bryan Lee O'Malley is stepping back into Scott Pilgrim's Toronto. At Comic-Con 2026, publisher Oni Press unveiled a new comic from the series creator: Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott, a one-shot prequel arriving November 15.

The comic serves as a bridge between the recently launched Scott Pilgrim EX beat-em-up game and the animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. It marks O'Malley's first original Scott Pilgrim comic since wrapping the main saga with Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour in 2010.

The premise finds Scott and Ramona settled into domestic bliss, their battle with Ramona's Seven Evil Exes long resolved. But peace doesn't last. A fresh threat emerges that will test whether the couple is ready for what comes next. O'Malley's official description frames it with his characteristic blend of humor and sincerity, nodding to the various iterations of the story across comics, animation, and now games.

"When I was asked to create a minicomic for Scott Pilgrim EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications," O'Malley said. "Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It's only a trifle, but returning to Scott's Toronto really did feel like coming home."

The new comic arrives as Scott Pilgrim EX itself continues the franchise's unexpected second life. The beat-em-up, developed by Tribute Games, has been met with critical praise for its gameplay depth and willingness to wrestle with what it means to revisit beloved properties years later. The game's appeal lies partly in its technical execution, but also in how it grapples with nostalgia itself, understanding that returning to these worlds means appreciating where the series has been rather than chasing what once was.
